I found out, after a bunch of searching, that my problem with the 'add media' button freezing is that if I have been logged into my own wordpress blog, that it's a known bug. I have to log out and clear my cache. Once I did this, it worked. Just FYI, in case this has happened to anyone else! But I'll take this alternate route! Thanks for the tutorial, I’ll try it.
