Just a few shots now it’s dry. I’ve already packed it and I’m off to mail it to the woman who retired. I have one more skein of this yarn and I’m going to knit myself something that I will keep this time. Re-Cap-
International Shawl
Four women participated in planning this shawl. missalicefaye, fleegle, yorksett and myself. I can’t remember who started it but I think it was fleegle. Via E-mail we discussed different patterns and came up with the center and tentative patterns for the border. I can only talk about what I used since I’m the only one to finish so far. fleegle started hers in a different yarn/color but it’s on hold for now. yorksett did not “feel the love” and I know missalicefaye is hip deep in the Princess Shawl and school. For what it’s worth, here is what I did.
Yarn: Black Bunny Fibers superfine alpaca lace weight yarn custom dyed in a semi-solid teal color. Needles US 0 needles
Center pattern: “Chrysantheme” German Niebling pattern but in a Japanese knitting book, “Knitted Lace Designs OF The ‘Modern’ Mode” Book 2 by Naoko Ichida. (up to row 53)This book comes with a stitch key in English.
Border:I placed stitch markers in the corners and selected one stitch as a center corner stitch. I increased on the plain knit row on either side of this stitch to make the corners. As my stitches in the corners increased, I extended the patterns to fill in those spaces. No system. Just eye-balled it.
First set of leaves in the border : Estonianleaf pattern, page 49, chart # 114 from the book “Pitsilised Koekirjad” by Leili Reimann (as many times as you want to make the border as deep as you want with the understanding that there is one more border pattern to go) Stitch key in English available on the internet.
Second border pattern : Shetland Lace pattern, Madeira and Diamond Chart on page 90 of “Heirloom Knitting” by Sharon Miller (as much as you want until you like how it looks)
Edging: Danish edge pattern from a doily page 74 “Rosa” pattern from “Knitted Lace” by Sonja Esbensen and Anna Rasmussen. Unlike some edges, this one is knit directly on the needles with a crochet cast-off at the end to finish.

The shawl is even more beautiful draped and pinned. Thanks so much for the photo.
Dear Sylvia,
I’m just happy to have a place to share the lace. Pictures is all I have now it’s been sent off. Guess I’ll just have to find a bigger/better project to make me happy
Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful!!!
I can’t imagine how deliriously happy (and lucky) the recipient must be!
Dear judybll,
I think she will like it once she get’s it. She’s seen a few pictures but it’s very different once it’s blocked. She’s a really lovely woman who I’ve worked with for years. So many of my co-workers are at that age for early retirement that I just know I will be knitting and giving away more lace in the future.
Oh this is stunning! I know that I’m not ready for a project this complex yet, but I’m working towards it
How fun it would be to be able to pull so many different patterns together into one amazing piece. I’ll bet it was a bit heart tugging to mail this one off, but how very generous of you to do so
Dear Marinemom,
I would never have thought to do this if not for fleegle who is a real instigator LOL. She has a very unique perspective on knitting in general and lace in particular. Nothing is too extreame for her and we all get pulled along. I’m not inventive but I am dogged! Do you have a project in mind that you are working towards? I must say that I have given so much of my lace away I didn’t think this one would be so difficult to give up but I really did feel a pang or two. Still, there is always the next project
This shawl is outstanding! Way over my head, but it’s lovely to see your work!
Dear nolaboard,
Glad you like it! When I first started knitting lace this would have been “way over my head” as well but as time has gone by I’ve knit more lace and learned from each project and from my many mistakes
Now I just have fun.
Your shawl is absolutely breathtaking!!! I love that shawl pin. Where did you get it?
Vicki
Dear Vicki,
Thank you! I bought the pin at northwestgoods.etsy.com and it can be used as either a shawl pin or hair ornament
