Midnight Sheep

I mess with glass, and string, and silver, and dyes, and pretty much anything I can get my hands on. The more industrial the process, the more I enjoy trying to squeeze it into my domestic environment, in a sliver of Victorian terraced house in South Wales, along with the family and the neighbor's cat.

I am looking forward to a new Season, as I have just got myself back into Lace Mode. I recently decided it was time to crack on with the Rock Island I started right at the end of the precious season. Yeah. On the last day, or the last week, or whatever it was, I [...]

Slow and late

Almost exactly two years ago, when I made my very first foray into lace, I picked on a poor, innocent pattern to sacrifice on the altar of my terrible knitting learning curve. The hapless victim was Aestlight, which I’d been assured was simple enough for a beginner, yet clearly looked very effective. I have to report [...]

Slow starter

I knit quite a lot of lace in the off-season. I thought a fair amount about lace in this season. I positively obsessed over spinning lace (without successfully spinning any, but it was enough to dissuade me from casting on with any existing, perfectly good lace yarn I might happen to have lying around the [...]

Will I ever learn?

I think I have a mental block about what constitutes lace. No, I don’t mean “does it have deliberate holes?” versus any other definition, but simply that Things Can Be Lace That Are Not Shawls. (Or scarves. Or maybe tablecloths.) I’ve managed to grasp that obviously lacy hats/gloves/mitts/cowls are – just about – lace, but [...]

A little bit of everything

Mar 212011

I have been making lace this season, in a small way. And pondering various grandiose ideas (because in my head, not only am I a better knitter and a better spinner, but also, I have far more time). The grandiose ideas are along the lines of a giant handspun Orenburg-type shawl in a Wensleydale/silk two-ply [...]

More lace for sore hearts

Dec 202010

As I wrote the previous post, I remembered another bit of knitting I’ve done this season (but back when the ground was covered with leaves, and not snow, so it seems a very long time ago). There are two funny things about this: firstly, that I never seem to think of socks as lace (and [...]

So far, so good

Dec 202010

I have dithered over what lace to attack next for almost the entire season. I had a Cunning Idea, which is still simmering away at the back of my brain (mostly I pull it out, take the metaphorical lid off it, and stir a little when I’m lying in the bath, where much plotting but [...]

Hands up, who made something else

I must be getting the hang of this knitting with holes stuff, maybe even blasé, because here is the other thing I finished recently, and actually forgot to mention: That, my friends, was a two-day project, even for me. A mitt a day, thanks to a simple pattern I actually understood and memorized instantly. Like [...]

The Biter Bit

Sep 222010

OK, I think it’s happened. The lace bug bit me, and my own archness finished me off. There I was, smugly knitting Annis – all 18 rows of lace (nine whole pattern rows to keep track of) – safe in the knowledge that that was all there was: after that, just some ‘nice restful stockinette’ [...]

I made lace! I made lace! I made lace!

Forgive the over-excitement, but I did it! I made some lace! I counted to er, more than two, correctly, many times over! You see, I spend a fair amount of time trying really hard to make lace, and not doing terribly well at it. And now, it turns out I knit some, without even thinking [...]
