This has been a very non-lacy season for me. Part of that has been due to knitting sweaters and hats, and part of that is due to knitting (gasp!) non-lace shawls.

I’m not crazy sock knitter. I’ve amassed a certain amount of socks over the years (and sock yarn begging to be knit up), but it’s not a driving passion. However, I find lace in a sock can be a great motivator, and as I’ve been intrigued by Cookie A’s Marlene for a while, I decided to make this one of my Ravelympics projects. I got them done just under the wire. Since today was bright and sunny, I finally got a half-way decent shot to share with you all.

Let’s see, the Olympics have been over a good 10 days now, and I’ve yet to post my final progress…I think that really sums it up! This is actually a pretty good (by pretty good I mean shows the whole thing in its bumpy, compressed glory–not that it reveals the pattern or anything) picture of my progress to date.

And a close-up:

There are several reasons why I didn’t finish by the (self-imposed) goal:

A head cold at the start of the Olympics severely hampered my initial progress.

Indecision. Was 12 repeats of the Yucca Chart enough? If I measure down the center and add 30%…or maybe I should just stretch and measure…or maybe…?

Answer: 12 repeats definitely not enough for my goal size (super-big). Let’s make it 16.

The purl-back rows are really looooong. And slightly boring.

Well, I was watching the Olympics, now wasn’t I?

And finally, I really didn’t have enough time to knit a shawl this big (unless I took off a lot of work).

I didn’t really expect going into this (realistically) to finish, so I can’t say I was too disappointed. On the contrary, I’m thrilled to have as much of this much-delayed shawl finished as I do (initially planned as a Fall ‘09 project). As of this moment, I’ve finished the (16) Yucca repeats and the transition chart. Bring on the Agave! Or not…I may have started something else last weekend…

To Be Continued….

To most knitters, dingle berries and vegetable matter are unknown, but to the knitter who also spins her own yarn, they remind me of that sheep and farmer and worm and pasture which is part of everything I knit.

Since the holiday knitting begins in September, for me, January is Selfish Knitting Month. This January, I was very selfish indeed. I used my own handspun merino/’silk in an almost-fingering weight yarn to knit this very special wrap. The pattern is Estonian Garden Wrap by Evelyn Clark. (Fiber Trends).

Estonian Garden Wrap was much easier to knit than I expected and the nupps were fun.

The color reminds me of grass in late summer – brown and golden and nearly straw.

Seems I am embarking on my own Year of Lace… my queue is full of them, but I have decided to be a bit selfish. I will work at my own speed and only work to please myself. It takes longer that way.. but it is sweeter.

Some things are Just RIGHT! Like another knit night full of laughter. This time I got stuck in a bizarre riff on mini-sheep and Bedlington terriers (which I’ve always thought looked rather like lambs), and the possibility of using mini-sheep instead of lawnmowers… I can’t repeat it… I’m not even sure what made it all so funny, but we laughed until we cried.

The laughing slowed my knitting down a bit… but I still made progress. Here is Irtfa’a three rows into the last chart before the edging!

I think maybe I can take out the life line that I put in at the beginning of the last chart, eh? You can even almost see the beginning of the new pattern taking shape!! But, in that picture anyway, you can’t see the beads closely enough to figure out what I decided to do. I’m still hoping I made the right decision.

This is only slightly better. While it clearly reveals that I’ve opted for the larger beads, you won’t be able to tell for another two rows that I’ve decided to use a blend of the larger and smaller beads in this section. I’d go for the big ones, but I fear that I won’t have enough to make it through two repeats of the chart and the edging. I’m hoping to avoid ordering beads AGAIN for this shawl.

Of course, if I’m wrong, I’ll just take out the wee beads, and suck it up to order more big ones. Ah well, that will be a good time to order the beads for Evenstar I guess.

I’m not so sure this is my season for lace. I got off to a pretty good start, or so I thought, on the Spring Time Bandit, and then realized that I somehow forgot the set up for the center stitch. It’s a steep triangle, and I’ve not yet figured out how to manage it. So, instead of fretting, I put it aside, and started on the Traveling Woman instead (pictures to come by the end of the week). I’m very pleased with it, although I seemed to have some issues with the stitch count. I altered the last chart, just a smidge, to make it work.

Now that it’s done, and my linen beach wrap is almost done, I’m almost ready to cast on something new. Mary White, on Ravelry, has several beautiful patterns I’m just itching to cast on, but I cannot decide which one. she recently designed Leaf Envy, using my Lavish Lace, and it’s just gorgeous. I just can’t decide what shade of green I’d like to use. Then there’s Fluidity and Sunstar. So many beautiful choices! What’s a girl to do?

I’ve hit a decision point on Irtfa’a, and I’m dithering so much I’ve decided to ask for help.

It’s about beads. I have to choose what to do about them before I knit the next row (which row I must finish before tomorrow night, when we have Knit Night).

You see, I’ve used two different bead sizes on this shawl. At the very top, I’ve used 6/0 beads.

I like those, but they seemed, oh, a bit heavy handed to put throughout a whole shawl. So…

Throughout the center section, I’ve used 8/0 beads.

Here’s that magic point where I switched bead sizes.

And now, I’m at the bottom. I plan to use the 8/0 beads at the very bottom — in the edging. But… what about this last section before the edging. Do I keep up with the 8/0 beads until the edging? Or do I go for the larger beads in this “Quill and Feather” section.

Or… do I do the first repeat of the Quill & Feather in wee beads, and the second and the edging in the “larger” ones?

Alas, photography is a challenge, what with it being night time and all….So that was the best I can get for shots with the beads in situ.

It is strange when I don’t have at least two projects going and as I finished the scarves (shown in the previous posting), I realized I didn’t have ANY projects to work on so I had to start 4 right away. They are all lace: the 2010 Calendar Lace Sample KAL, the Evenstar Mystery KAL, Sharon Millers Pink Puzzle Wrap (not in pink), and my own pattern. I plan to give the Puzzle Wrap to a good friend who announced last week that she is getting married again in June (she is in her 70s and a Great-Grandmother). I started this three times before I found the right yarn in my stash for it and her: Kid Seta Mohair.

The original pattern piece came to me when I was doing the January clue in the first KAL – Winter Wonderland. I am using yarn that I bought from one of our Autumn Lace Sponsors, Skaska Designs Limited. I had hoped to start a shawl with this yarn last Fall but never got to it so I am starting one now. This is the start of the center panel of the stole.

I am planning to have the end panels blend from the snowflakes to a mountain of trees and then I’ll have to come up with a lace edging.

As for the Evenstar, I may end up making two because, this one is the correct colors for my sister but I really like it in a blues silk that I have (maybe for me). I haven’t started it in the second color yet. This yarn is tencel and I am hoping that what I read somewhere is correct and that I can kill it so it will be easier for my sister to take care of it.

At getting pictures and posting things here that is. Here are some of my FO’s The first, the Genevieve Shaw from Heirloom Knitting, is really related to the Fall Seasons of Lace but I only managed to finish it in Late Jan.

These three scarves were done in an effort to make sure I have enough scarves to balance the shawls for an art show I will be in in April. They won’t all go in but that leaves one or two for next year? All the patterns are different (the last two only slightly) and all my design. I’m also trying to decide whether to write up the patterns for any of them or not.

So I’m going through my pile of lace WIPs and I find my Alhambria scarf that I had started ages ago and was still just about 40% finished. In my eagerness for warmer weather I started to get that spring cleaning bug so I started to work away on it once again. While I was at the table knitting with my almost 2 year old DD, she had a tantrum while coloring, wobbled and fell off her chair. As I’m sure you can imagine I just threw my knitting down and scooped her up to console her (she’s totally fine but the fall freaked her out). We went to the living room to snuggle and then my mom came home. My DS (3 years old) went running in to greet her and found my knitting on the table…

…one can only begin to guess what happened next.

I was switching my stitch markers with the newer ones I had made and apparently he wanted to help. He pulled the knitting off of one of the needles and when I tried to fix it all the yo’s just started to drop down the pattern. There’s no fixing it. My heart hurts a little bit, but I’m sure I’ll make it. Lets just say that my mother made sure to mention the fact that I had failed to make a lifeline…that I always make lifelines…and what was I thinking not having a lifeline. So I’ve learned my lesson (again) and have made sure to have lifelines in my lace that I bring out of my room.

Off to work on my Damson some more (please note the recently made lifeline)…just about 12 more rows left. It’s one of those pieces that I just can’t wait to get off the needles just so I can wear it. The colors are just so wonderful and the pattern so simple and cute, it’s an all around delight. Not to mention it’s Malabrigo sock and it’s super soft.

Well my friends, peace, love and popsicle sticks…and may the yarn faeries guard your lace from your wee little loved ones.
That’s Chart B mind you without rest rows. It’s intense. I ended last night near midnight with only eight rows left on Chart B! I’m determined to finish this shawl before the first day of spring – or – should I say the final day of winter?

Some of you follow along on my blog and have seen that I’m starting a new vision quest with lace knitting. Feel free to come, watch and comment as I swatch my way through the lace sections of the Treasury of Knitting books.

I don’t expect I’ll get as many projects finished during my vision quest but that’s part of the process.

I love knit night at my house. Not only is there good knitting, and good company (hi Banshee! hi escr!), but sometimes, there is hilarity that leaves your tummy sore. Last night was one of those. There were recitations of the ditty about Moses, who supposes his toeses are roses…. and there was a discussion about the Vessel with the Pestle which originally contained the Pellet with the Poison, until the Chalice with the Palace was broken, when it was refilled with Brew that is True and then the Pellet with the poison wound up in the Flagon with the Dragon. During that discussion, we learned that fully half our number had not, in fact, seen Danny Kaye’s brilliant performance in the Court Jester, and we were compelled to watch it from that point on through the snapping fight scene. (if you’d like to see the videos of these, I’ve embedded them in my cross-posted blog post)

Despite the hilarity, I got some charting done for a shawl I’m brewing in my head, and I got some knitting done on Irtfa’a. We’re closing in on the end of the small feather section at last. I’ve got two and a half rows to go before I start the next chart. And that means, according to the agreement that escr and I made last night, that I’ve got three and a half rows to get done by 7:00 next Tuesday evening, when we’ll be confirming the accuracy of our starts for the Quill & Feather charts.

I was knitting along on Irtfa’a today, making sure I get to my appointed row by next week, and suddenly realized something.

This shawl is LARGE! Look at this… it covers my whole lap, and the arm of the chair, with plenty of lacy fabric to spare. And this isn’t blocked or stretched or anything.

I know, I shouldn’t be surprised. It started out as a full sized design, and I’ve gone and added another 20% or so — what with the added repeats and all. So, it’s gonna be bigger. I get that part. But … but…. it’s gonna be LARGE.

W00t!

I’ve been averaging about 2 rows of knitting a day on my Titania project (1 pattern row, and 1 return/purl row.) Yesterday, I did 5, sort of. I got a bead row done during breaks at work, and then blasted through the next 3 non-bead rows during knit night. And then came the next bead row, which was also a pattern transition row. At which point I suffered total knitting failure. First, I started off fine, and then at some point I suddenly realized I was on a bead row and I had no idea when I had stopped adding beads. Oh, there they are… about 8 inches of knitting missing the beads. Sigh. Oh well, I’ll just catch those when I purl back. Thankfully no tinking required.

I continue knitting, being more careful about adding beads. I get to the transition point which has a slightly different pattern… wait a minute, this is the second transition point… there’s another one earlier in the row. I don’t remember doing the earlier transition… look back along row… sigh… yep, missed that one. Tink, tink, tink, tink, tink, tink, tink, tink.

Quite a while later, after what seems like much more intense concentration than I usually need when working on this pattern, I finally finish the row, although I still have bead corrections to make on the purl row today. I also left knit night about an hour later than I usually do after taking the time to fix/finish the row. This just goes to show you that knit night with fun conversation, a LOT of uncontrollable giggling, a quite tasty pomegranate wine, and an old Danny Kay movie can play havoc with your knitting! At least I didn’t drop any stitches! (Hmmm… that I know of…)

Not that I would ever give up knit night! After all, even with that messed up row, I still got 3 more rows of knitting done than most weekdays!

OK – I let our knitter’s talk me into doing something outrageous. We currently have 942 Evenstar knitters, and it seems some of our more – ahem – enthusiastic members really want to see us reach the big 1000.

Now, I told them this was highly unlikely, since sign-ups end tonight at midnight, but they suggested we could make a final push and reach that elusive number 1000. They wanted to know if we could do some kind of contest.

Well, y’all know how I love a good contest, especially if it involves nothing more from me than emailing a pattern…or two…or three…

How do y’all feel about seventy?

Here’s what we’re gonna do:

I will give the entire Fellowship of the Ring series (seven patterns – $45 value) FREE to numbers 950, 960, 970, 980, 990, and 1000.

I will also randomly award two free pattern series to current subscribers, to thank you for your support.

If you order the FotR series tomorrow and are the winner, I will refund the full amount on Tuesday.

So spread the word please – email your friends – plurk your pals – post on your blog – discuss in the RAV forums.

And I will extend sign ups one more day: Monday, March 1st – midnight EST.

So…do you feel lucky? Huh? Do ya?

If you’ve not joined up already, now is an excellent time to do so! come play Evenstar with us!!!

I just noticed that i had’nt even posted last months shawl and i’ve been really busy this month!! In Jan I finished the Mum shawl from Susan Pandorf. This was a wonderful knit and I really love the way she ended it!! I just wish I had a decent photo that shows off the beads!! This one is loaded with them!!!

Next on the needles was the Mystery Shawl 16 from Goddess Knits. Started on Jan 23 with the first clue and finished on Feb 27!! It was fun, and it is a monster!! That’s a Queen size bed it’s blocking on!!

and yes, it hangs off that much on the other side too!!!

Next is the Green Moss Shawl for the Ravelympics!!! This little puppy was something else!! I think if I ever do it again I’m going to add to the edging that’s knit on. It’s just a little tight compared to the top. This starts with about 63 stitches and ends with a little over 300!!

I just wish my photography skills were better, this is truly a beautiful shawl!!

Then for the HPKCHC (Harry Potter group on Ravelry) I did a pi shawl in a just for fun pattern I call this Tropical Fish and it took about 1230 yds of laceweight!!

This was started on Feb 1 and finihsed on Feb 24. I love the Perchance to Knit yarn from our sponsor Loopy Ewe!!! It’s really fun and I used it on the Green Moss and on this one!!

I don’t expect March to be nearly as productive, but I have joined a group that’s going to knit during Alaska’s Ideraron (probably now spelled right) dog sled Race!!! I haven’t picked out a shawl just yet, but I’m leaning towards something big!!!

Life at my house has been … well… interesting.

However, it hasn’t completely stopped me from making lace progress.

When last we say The Wings of Bambu, I was facing a bit of a problem. You see, there was a bit of design discrepancy — partly the designer, partly me, partly a mis-communication between me and the designer when I was talking to her about what her intent was. Since I can’t “see” things in written out lace, and have not yet tried to tackle charting something with knit 3-into-1 going on in every row), I couldn’t tell whether it was a mistake when those knit 3-into-1’s stopped lining up in the center of the previous knit 3-into-1. So, I looked her up, and we conversed.

She assumed I was talking about one place, but I was talking about another. This caused me to knit forward incorrectly for a bit making things match up that weren’t quite supposed to. That discrepancy and confusion made me rip back about 10 rows. Now, I’ve tweaked it a bit, and tried to make it do what I think she was aiming for in a slightly subtler way than I think she did. I may, however, have just made a confusing mess. Either way, as far as I’m concerned, I’ve recovered and gone past it. Even if what I did to tweak it my way (and sort of do what I think she told me she was aiming for), doesn’t turn out to have been spot on…. I’m leaving it this way. We’ll be able to see in about ten or so more rows.

Now I just need to find some time to sit and knit!

so here is my Echo Flowers FO called “Galil Flowers”, finally

It has been finished for nearly two weeks now, in fact, but the fact that I couldn’t reach the SoL-Homepage from Austria and the lack of that sunny day to take a photo I had waited for kept me from posting the FO.

The Shawl is really warm on my shoulders and I think it will be a great at-home-comfort-shawl. I really am happy and proud to have mastered those nupps that nearly drove me crazy. And I particularly like the way the cast-off turned out and, of course, that lovely color of the yarn. It just fits the flowery shawl pattern sooo well

Not all of the “Bad Nupps” blocked out, unfortunately, but at some point I did realize that, probably, other then me nobody will ever notice.

Talking of nupps: Remember how I thought I’d never go through this ball of yarn when casting on? I still thought so when starting those nupps … well … two rows later I didn’t. And after having finished the shawl the ball of yarn happened to look like that:

I really was sweating when knitting those final rows. I wonder how much yards are left on this about walnut-sized ball? Perhaps I rather don’t know … I think I may have to make a sacrifice for the goddess of knitting (whoever that might be) for guiding me so well as for how many repeats of the flowers to knit!
